At a recent COP (Community of Practice) we were discussing ways to keep up with the latest industry news and the ways in which we can share this information. It was this discussion that reminded of a really nice idea that was put into practice whilst I was previously working at NewVoiceMedia.

The idea is extremely simple and as you might have guessed from the title it’s a book club… at work.

The way it works:

  • You pick a newly released book, or a classic if you like.

  • Each club member will be required to purchase the book.

  • You agree on how much to read and your cadence of meetings.

  • Every week (or your agreed cadence) you and your fellow club members meet for an hour. Before the meet, you MUST have read the agreed chapter or number of pages.

  • Then in the meeting, you go through the chapter as a group and discuss it in detail. You’ll be amazed at how people interpret things differently.

  • If you find interesting ideas and things to try from the books you read then make sure you put them into practice. This way, you know that you’re getting value from the club.

  • Repeat.

Feel free to also try this with TED talks, Blogs, magazines and anything else you can think of. We did a few TED talks using the same steps above and it worked really nicely.

So there you have it, a really nice and simple way to stay ahead, continue to learn, share knowledge and hopefully try a few new things to help your team or organisation improve.

If you have any similar little hacks then please feel free to share below.
